Who will you meet ?
Dr. Azar Panah
Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
The George Washington University, School of Engineering and Applied Science Dr. Panah is passionate about fluid mechanics and is fascinated by the mechanics of flying birds and swimming fish. Her research focuses on the unsteady aerodynamics of flapping wings. She enjoys exploring intriguing questions, especially if she can inspire her students to sleuth around and wonder with her. Dr. Panah has taught undergraduate courses in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and turbomachinery. She also has developed a unique course on the art and science of flow visualization, to understand its impact on visual perception and educational outcomes. Furthermore, she serves as the Coordinator of the Gallery of Fluid Motion (GFM) at the American Physical Society’s Division of Fluid Dynamics (APS-DFD). In this role, she contributes to the fluid dynamics community with dedication, passion, and commitment.
Erin Vogt
Director of Graduate Recruitment and Admissions
The George Washington University, School of Engineering and Applied Science Erin Vogt serves as the Director of Graduate Recruitment and Admissions at GW Engineering, where she works with prospective students throughout the graduate admissions process. With more than 15 years of experience in higher and international education, she is passionate about helping students find programs that align with their academic and career goals. Erin holds a B.A. in Intercultural Communication from the University of Pittsburgh and an M.A. in International Affairs from Florida State University.Birds have spent millions of years evolving remarkable flying abilities, yet many of the aerodynamic principles behind their agility and efficiency remain a mystery. This masterclass explores how engineers study the motion of flapping wings using advanced flow visualization techniques to reveal the invisible air that generates lift, thrust, and maneuverability. These discoveries not only deepen our understanding of nature but also inspire the design of more efficient aircraft and drones. The session will also showcase how fluid dynamics research can reach beyond the laboratory through museum exhibitions that combine science, engineering, and art, making complex ideas accessible to the public and inspiring future generations to explore the wonders of science.
