The George Washington University, School of Engineering and Applied Science Dr. John Helveston, Assistant Professor, Engineering Management and Systems Engineering John Paul (JP) is an Assistant Professor at George Washington University in the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering. His research focuses on understanding how consumer preferences, market dynamics, and policy affect the emergence and adoption of low-carbon technologies, such as electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies. He also studies the critical relationship between the US and China in developing and mass producing these technologies. He has expertise in discrete choice modeling, conjoint analysis, exploratory data analysis, interview-based research methods, and the R programming language. He speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese and has conducted extensive fieldwork in China. He is also an accomplished violinist and swing dancer. John holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University and a B.S. in Engineering Science and Mechanics (ESM) from Virginia Tech.Erin Vogt
Senior Associate Director, Graduate Recruitment & Admission
The George Washington University, School of Engineering and Applied Science Erin Vogt; Senior Associate Director, Graduate Recruitment & Admission Erin manages graduate recruitment and admissions operations for the School of Engineering and Applied Science. With 10+ years of experience in higher and international education, Erin is passionate about helping students find the best-fit university for their personal and professional goals. Erin has a B.A. in Intercultural Communication from the University of Pittsburgh and an M.A. in International Affairs from Florida State University. In this session, Professor JP Helveston, Assistant Professor in EMSE and Director of the Data Analytics MS program, presented how he used Conjoint Analysis, a market research technique, to design survey experiments and build models to predict consumer choices. He applied this technique in his research to inform policy on consumer adoption of emerging technologies, such as electric vehicles and solar panels. Professor Helveston also discussed how he teaches this method in an EMSE course and mentioned several R packages he authored to support experiment design and model estimation. Additionally, the session covered emerging career opportunities in this field and highlighted how George Washington University graduates have successfully leveraged their master's degrees to secure promising career paths.
